"...Now almost five years into the program, I believe the ombuds office has added value as an early warning system. Whether it is for emerging trends or for a still brewing problem. Clearly, it has helped the organization surface and resolve issues to increase American Express employee satisfaction..."

- Harvey Golub,
former Chairman & CEO of American Express,
addressing the Ombudsman Association
Annual Meeting, May 17, 1999

Ombudsman Services

An Ombudsman is a designated neutral party who hears complaints in confidence, and provides informal assistance in arriving at fair and equitable solutions.

The MORE ombudsman is a contract provider who may report to the chief executive officer or division head. He or she listens, ascertains facts, negotiates, helps develop solutions and assists in their implementation. Independence, neutrality and confidentiality are crucial to the effectiveness of the ombudsman. With confidentiality assured, parties can feel free to discuss concerns that might otherwise have remained unaired.

Employing an outside service to resolve conflicts yields two main advantages: First, company leadership is afforded unbiased opportunities to examine and improve policies and procedures, refine internal communications, spot trends, and uncover and address problems before they become crises. Second, employees are provided a safe place to raise issues that they might not have been willing to discuss with company staff, so that issues which would otherwise remain hidden can be dealt with constructively.

Consultation

MORE can help your company design, launch and evaluate dispute resolution and ombudsman systems to identify and reduce the root causes of conflict, which can range from personality issues and lack of information, to organizational deficiencies.

Conflict reduction programs often call for significant changes in policy. MORE consultants can help your company navigate this process, providing ongoing evaluation and training to fit your changing needs.

Mediation

Mediation is the intervention into a dispute or the negotiation of an dispute or the negotiation of an acceptable, impartial, and neutral third party. The MORE mediator, who has no authoritative decision-making power, helps contending parties to voluntarily reach their own mutually acceptable settlement of issues in dispute.

There are several benefits of mediation over settlements imposed by an outside authority. Among them:

  • It is less expensive than litigation
  • It takes less time than litigation
  • Parties participate in their own settlement, and are therefore more inclined to be satisfied with the result
  • For the same reason, parties are more likely to comply with the terms of the settlement and attend to the fine details of implementation.

Training

Increased global competition amid a rapidly changing workplace has placed unprecedented demands on organizations and their leaders, and the need for team effectiveness has never been greater. To help you and your organization stay focused and effective, MORE can design and tailor coaching and training programs that meet your specific needs.

MORE can facilitate training in the areas of:

  • Organizational Mediation
  • Ethics Awareness
  • Leadership Development
  • Diversity

THE BOTTOM LINE is that MORE helps you make the most of your valuable resource: people. By effectively resolving conflicts, providing early warning of potential problems and helping you manage change, MORE can help you to become a more effective leader, while helping your company create a happier, more productive and secure work environment.
